Young Women's HIV/AIDS Awareness Radio Series

The audio and activity books from this project can be downloaded from our programme library.

StudioYoung women are the highest risk category in Ghana in terms of HIV/AIDS. At the same time, they are often faced with challenges that limit their abilities to make good decisions
on prevention. To address this issue, CMFD facilitated a group of young women to develop, write and produce radio messages or Public Service Announcements (PSAs) about HIV/AIDS. The young women ranged in age from 15 years to 18 years.

Together, they discussed and prioritized what issues are most relevant to themselves and their friends. They went on to write a number of scripts, approaching HIV/AIDS awareness from different aspects. As a team they reviewed each others scripts, made suggestions and helped each other to translate them into local languages. Although none have any previous experience in voicing, they have all responded fantastically to coaching, and are voiced their scripts with great results.

The PSAs along with background materials were distributed free of charge to radio stations in Ghana. A corresponding literacy booklet, with audio cassette, was given to literacy programmes.

Several of the young women were invited to participate in a talk show on local radio to discuss HIV. As well, director Daniel Walter was interviewed on another radio breakfast show about the programmes.
