Media for Development was on hand
April 26-30 in
Chimoio, Mozambique to provide technical assistance that
enabled community radio participants to produce on the spot Portuguese
language programmes about the formation of the national community
radio forum, and other issues related to community radio. A
number of community radio producers interviewed participants and
produced programmes.

Community
Radio Meets in Mozambique
300 community radio activitists, programme producers and community
managers met April 26-30 to formalise a National Community Radio Forum
for Mozambique. Activities included discussing statutes and other
legal and structural issues, as well the sharing of experiences.
The membership-based Forum aims to be a facilitating umbrella for
all the 45 community radios and Community Multimedia Centres now on air
in Mozambique. Sustainability of this people's movement will be at the
core of the mandate and work of the forum, which will work with
training & programme production, legal, technical, and financial
issues.
The meeting took place at the Red Cross Training Center in Chimoio in
the centre of Mozambique. Along with Mozambican community radio
represenatatives there was participation from Angola, South Africa and
Europe.
The planning secretariat of this event was the UNESCO/UNDP Media
Project in Maputo. The Conference-cum-festival was supported by: UNDP,
UNESCO, NiZA, Ibis, OSISA, AMARC, Radio Mthiyana, and the Embassies of
Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Norway, Portugal and Sweden.
