"Live in Hillbrow"
Music Concerts to Support Community Development
Community Media
for
development is
putting on a series of music concerts in the inner-city suburb of
Hillbrow in Johannesburg, an area often known more for its reputation
of rough streets and crime-ridden neighborhoods than artistic
expression. The concerts are part of a fundraising and awareness
building effort to support community development projects and promote
local talent.
The series of
four
concerts
are
taking place in various venues around Hillbrow, and has been dubbed
"Live in Hillbrow". Each concert features 6 to 10 groups of performers.
The music from the concerts is being recorded and will be produced into
a compilation CD/cassette from which all profits from sales will go
towards supporting community development projects. One of these
projects is the Hillbrow Community Media Centre which will provide an
opportunity for people from the area to be trained in media skills, and
will produce programs - radio shows, photo exhibits, short stories - on
issues of importance to residents.

" It is true that
there
are
many
problems in Hillbrow," says John Sithole, Director of the African
Cultural Heritage Trust. "but there are also a lot of people working
very hard to clean up the environment, reduce crime, create economic
development, and promote the arts within this diverse and vibrant
community."

The
music
concerts
focus on
traditional music styles, most notably Mascandi, a Zulu style of music
with accompanying dancers. Audiences have received the first two
shows with much enthusiasm. "The music and dancers are wonderful", says
Hillbrow resident Nellie Nkwane, I wish there were more performances
like this in the neighborhood."
Two
more concerts
are
planned
for
the month of July. Entrance to all of the concerts is free of charge.
All musicians, venues, sound equipment, sound engineers, recording and
promotions are being donated free of charge for the cause.

"Musical events
are a
great
way to
get people together and inspired, and start talking about how to work
together for community development," says Daniel Walter, Director of
Community Media for Development. "Hillbrow is such a rich and diverse
area, and there is a lot of enthusiasm for working together for change.
We want to both promote cultural music and local talent through these
concerts, and raise funds for supporting the efforts of people working
together."
Much work is
currently
being
done
to promote the regeneration of the inner-city. "We are bringing people
together to develop this community," says Ward 63 Councilor M E
Tyobeka, "Not that we are coming in to do everything, but more
importantly we want people to work together to make things better for
themselves."
The music series
is a
collaboration
between Community Media for Development (CMFD) and The African Cultural
Heritage Trust. CMFD is a non-profit organisation that works with
communities to use media for development. The African Cultural Heritage
Trust is a non-profit that helps to promote and develop artistic and
cultural expression.
