Trees are very important, they do so
many things for us. Listen to this sad story of how a man broke his
promise to his trees. When the man first planted the trees, the
seedlings were very happy and offered to do so many things for him.
|
|
Seedling
|
(Happy voice) Master, God Bless you.
We seedlings promise to serve you in any way we can. We shall bear
fruit, provide you and your animals shelter, protect you against strong
winds, purify the air for you to breathe, protect the soil and many
other things.
|
|
Man

That is kind of you. I shall keep
you safe.

Seedling

Good. We the trees shall remain your
servants forever. So take very good care of us.

Years pass and the seedlings have

to cut the trees.

Please! Remember we are the trees
that bore you fruit to eat, we provided you with shelter, and we
protected your house against strong wind. Most importantly, we change
the carbon dioxide you breathe out into oxygen for you to breathe.

Man

(Impatient) Look! I need the land
here to cultivate the crops to feed my family

Seedlings (Trees)

(sad) You will lose our services, if
you continue to destroy all of us on this earth and the place will
become unsafe for you to live in. The last human beings will die the
very day the last tree will be cut down.
Please stop cutting us. The longer
we live the longer you will also live and the happier you will be.

A wise chief is worried about his
village. He sees that the people are not caring for the land, and that
soon the village will be destroyed. He calls his people together, to
talk to them about the land.

(Sound of people shuffling fading

|
|
Chief
|
I have called you here today to talk
to you about our future. Desertification is caused by our ignorance, by
over-cultivating and by h bad farming methods. This will result in the
depletion of the soil nutrients and the exposure of the soil to the
agents of erosion that will end in desertification.
Furthermore, bush burning,
overgrazing and cutting of trees destroys the vegetative cover of the
soil and all its nutrients leaving the soil bare poor for growing.
We are suffering because we are
abusing our motherland. Let us plant more trees and replace any tree
whenever we cut it. Lets stop overgrazing and bush-burning to make our
land a safe place to live. Let us stop desertification and save our
motherland for the future.

the issue.

I am dead. What will I do now? My cocoa and cassava farms are gone. Oh

Agya Koo.

Agya Koo

sick?
|

Mr Kusi

(Takes a deep breathe) Hmmmm my
farms are gone!
|
|
Agya Koo
|
(In surprise) What happened?
|
|
Mr.Kusi
|
All my farms are burnt by fire. I
just don’t know what to do. Where will I get money to pay my children’s
school fees? And how will I feed my family.
|
|
Agya Koo
|
How did it happen?
|
|
Mr.Kusi
|
It was yesterday. I roasted some
cassava on my farm when I went to farm to work. I seems I did not put
the fire out properly when I was leaving.
|
|
Agya Koo
|
(Sounding sad) This is sad
indeed. I have been telling you that fire is a good servant but a bad
master. If we don’t do something about the way fires are consuming our
farms, the whole village will go hungry this year. I am told that some
people were looking for grass cutters and they set fire to the bush
around Adongo’s farm. The fire burnt the bush and all of Adongo’s crops.
|
|
Mr.Kusi
|
What will I do now?
|
|
Agya Koo
|
We will think of your problem later,
but now we have to go and tell everyone in the village about how these
bushfires can be prevented. The palm wine tappers, the hunters, smokers
and everybody must learn to use fire carefully. Otherwise these
bushfires will destroy our crops, economic trees, and expose the soil
to desertification.

Mr.Kusi

That is a good idea

Hi Folks!
I am Koo Mosqui, alias the bloodsucker. A
dirty environment with spots of stagnant water is my delight. This
ensures my continuous survival and regeneration. The more the stench,
the happier am I!
If you care to know, I am not only the
bloodsucker but I am also an infector who causes malaria in people. I
am always excited when people fail to keep their environment clean.
What an excitement! What happiness!
Hey people! What I hate most is a clean
and tidy environment. I do not get close to such places. See how kind I
am?
To avoid me the mosquito, keep your
environment clean and tidy. To do this, desilt your gutters, dispose of
all your refuse and remove spots of stagnant water. Then I will be
nowhere near you.

Announcer

Remember a healthy environment means
a healthy people and thus a healthy nation. Dirt breeds disease.
Dumping of waste indiscriminately brings harm to the environment.
Statistics show that about 2800 children die every day of malaria in
Africa. This is largely a result of improper waste disposal, which
breeds mosquitoes. Stop harmful practices to your environment. For a
healthy environment, learn to dispose waste in the refuse dump. Stop
throwing waste bout. When in a moving car, keep rubbish until you are
out of the car and throw it in the nearest refuse dump. Car owners are
advised to keep the environment clean by providing a small refuse
container in the car.
Learn to keep the environment clean,
for your environment is you.

Announcer

Mr. Nsobila is regretting that
bushfires are destroying their farmlands and creating hunger in the
village. He wants everyone to know the dangers of bushfires. Listen to
his message:
|
|
Mr. Nsobila
|
Bushfire is one of the causes
of low agricultural production in the country. In fact, the effects of
bushfires cannot be overemphasized.
Firstly bushfires bring about
starvation when food crops and many other agricultural products are
burnt. Even students can not go to school because parents cannot get
money for their fees.
In the year 2001, there was a
shortage of food in my village. Wulugu, due to the serious effects of
bushfires. And people had to request food aid from the government.
Bush fires expose the soil to
erosion, destroys natural fruit trees, kill the micro-organisms in the
soil which create good environ for crops to grow. Sometimes fire can
burn our houses. All these are the sources of our sufferings.
So palm wine tappers, hunters,
cigarette smokers, farmers and all those who might set fire to the
bushes must carefully examine their activities to prevent bushfires.
Besides, more fire volunteers should be trained, and severe penalties
should be given to anyone who deliberately sets fire to the bushes.
Preventing
bushfires is the only way we can protect our environment and ensure
higher food production and a safer life on earth.
