Bona-Ke Africa (Look at this Africa) is a six part radio series that addresses the issues, challenges and concerns faced by the African gay community.
Africa is a hostile place for gays and lesbians to live. Most African countries have strong anti-gay laws and punishments can be very harsh for the mere fact of just being gay. Bona-Ke Africa is intended primarily to address a straight audience to educate about the gay people that go to their schools, churches, and walk the same streets.
The six programme topics are:
We're here! Discusses the issue of being gay in Africa and whether it is natural to be gay or a product of social conditioning.
Coming out Examines the challenges of coming out and the importance of having a gay identity recognized.
Family and Relationships Investigates the reaction of African families to the identity of their gay children, also a look at the gay relationship itself.
Sex discovers the various ways that gay people enjoy sex and shows that many straight people still have a lot to learn about sex and sexual empowerment.
Faith and Belief Interprets different faiths, traditional and western and their role in and influence on gay society.
Where We Stand Looks at the legal issues facing Africa and why gay rights are important.
These programmes aim to demystify and sensitize Africans to the reality that is gay life. They are intended to air voluntarily on community radio stations as well as many commercial radio stations around Africa (predominantly southern Africa). Each segment is 15 minutes.
Bona-Ke Africa is produced by CMFD and supported by Behind the Mask.
The first show in the series has been completed and we are currently working to produce and source funding for the reamianing.
