The campaign aims to raise awareness around gender and 2010, using the FIFA World Cup in South Africa as a platform.
At the launch, CMFD was busy conducting interviews with media and gender activists from all over Southern Africa. The interviews are being used to produce a series of five radio features focusing on the five main campaign themes: women and sport; economic opportunities; human trafficking; sex work; and gender, media and sport.
The event began with the launch of issue seven of the Gender and Media Diversity Journal, which examines women, media and sport in 2010. This was followed by presentations from key speakers, including Litha Musyimi-Ogana (pictured at left), Director of Women and Gender for the African Union Commission. Musyimi-Ogana was in Johannesburg on another mission, and made a special point of visiting the launch to address the delegation.
Presentations were followed by a colloquium on the problems and possiblities 2010 poses for women, based on the five key themes. The day concluded with a soccer match between two local women's teams.
