On December 10, 2009, CMFD participated in the launch of a new campaign, Score a Goal for Gender Equality, spearheaded by Gender Links and the Gender and Media Diversity Centre (GMDC).
Radio for Peacebuilding Africa recently awarded CMFD's six-part serial drama Crossroads winner of the Radio for Peacebuilding Africa Awards Special Category.
The demonstation was organised to protest Sasol's plans to build a new coal-to-liquids plant, as well as raise awareness of the effects that large emitters like Sasol and Eskom are having on the environment and the people who live near their plants.
The event was staged as a mock trial, with Eskom, nuclear energy, Arcelor Mittal, and of course Sasol tried and executed for crimes against the environment. The highly participatory theatre production, created and performed by the Well Worn Theatre company, gave people directly affected by the energy giants a platform to voice their views and talk about what is happening in their communities. Individuals and organisations from as far afield as Pietermaritzburg in Kwa-Zulu Natal were bussed in specifically for the event, which was attended by approximately 400 people.
CMFD was on-hand with audio and video recorders to capture the high-energy event. Canadian volunteer Christina Gray produced a six-minute radio feature about the demonstration for CMFD.
