Pilot Episode Synopsis – Welcome to Our World!
Eric is kicked out of his boyfriend Molefi’s house after the two are discovered in bed by Molefi’s brother. He was trying to have safer sex didn’t want to do it in the dark. His best friend Thembi encourages him to find his own place – a boy needs his space, after all – so he goes with Thembi to check the message board at the hair salon where she works, run by Fabulous Flora, the community’s wise and wonderful transgendered hairdresser.
At the salon, the crew runs into Nthabiseng, who’s been away in Jozi, and has only just pulled into town. Flora announces she’s having a party at the salon that evening and Nthabiseng and Thembi remain alone together to decorate.
At the party Thembi and Nthabiseng spend time getting to know each other. It’s clear there are sparks between them and Nthabi invites Thembi to the Pride March, telling her not to be afraid of what people might think. Eric gets lucky at the party too. He meets Devan, a white guy he hasn’t seen before, and they spend the night dancing together.
Eric, having contacted several leads from Flora’s message board, finds his own place. Molefi stops by, hoping that he and Eric will finally be able to have sex, but when Eric insists on a condom, Molefi gets angry and storms off. Eric goes to a shebeen to drink away his pain.
The next morning Thembi meets up with a very upset Eric. He’d gotten too drunk and possibly had sex with someone but can’t remember if he used a condom; in fact he can’t remember anything about the guy at all! Thembi takes Eric to the hospital where they find out that a ‘morning after’ pill Thembi had heard about is actually a month-long course of expensive drugs, and Eric has to test HIV negative before he can take them.
As they leave the consultation room, they meet Nthabiseng, who’s brought Flora in for pneumonia. Flora is living with HIV and has left a bad cough go unchecked for too long. Eric talks to Flora about his risky behaviour. Flora consoles him and encourages him to pursue his relationship with Devan.
Meanwhile, Nthabiseng has dropped a bomb on Thembi, telling her they can’t be together, even though they clearly like each other. Thembi, upset and confused, leaves the hospital.
Later that day, Nthabiseng goes to the salon, where Thembi is preparing to lock up. She confesses that she is afraid that Thembi will reject her if she discovers her past. The episode ends with a challenge by Thembi: Tell me. I won’t turn my back on you.
