Definitions Sexual Orientation This refers to who a person is attracted to. Heterosexuality, or having relationships with a person of the opposite sex, is only one of many sexual orientations. Gender Identity Gender identity refers to feeling like a man or a woman. Just because a person looks like a woman or a man physically does not mean that person feels like a woman or a man inside. Homosexual Homosexual is a general term for a person who is sexually attracted to another person of the same sex. Lesbian This word refers specifically to women who are attracted to other women. Many people think that being a lesbian means you have to look and act ‘masculine.’ This is simply not true. What a person looks like or chooses to wear is not a reflection on their sexual orientation. This means that a heterosexual or straight woman can choose to look ‘masculine’ just as easily as a lesbian woman can choose to look ‘feminine.’ Gay This word refers specifically to men who are attracted to other men. Many people think that being a gay man means you have to look and act ‘feminine.’ This is also a myth. Bisexual A bisexual person is a person who is attracted to both men and women. Some may be equally attracted to men and women; others may be more attracted to men, or more attracted to women. Transgender A transgender person is a person whose gender identity is different from their physical sex. Some transgender people decide to take hormone and other treatments to change their physical sex to match their gender identity. Others choose to show their gender identity in other ways. Intersex Intersex people are born with both male and female sexual organs. Many more babies than most people think are born with both sets of sexual organs, or parts of both. Often times when such babies are born, doctors make the decision to accept one set and remove the other, making the baby into a ‘normal’ girl or boy. Some people feel this can lead to confusion about gender identity later in life |
