The Radio Drama
The radio drama will consist of a series of thirteen episodes of 15 minutes that explore lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) life in South Africa. The drama focuses on a core group of 5 or 6 friends, who are young people between 16-29 years old, living in a peri-urban community. It deals with relationships, exploration of sexuality, friendships, life-plans and so on. Through dramatic situations the characters confront and wrestle with important social issues such as rape, sexual abuse, condom use, and discrimination of all forms. At the same time, the series is lively and entertaining, with both drama and comedy.

Why the Drama Series?
Despite the promise of full constitutional rights, there remains a great deal of socialised and institutionalised homophobia in South Africa. Formative research conducted for the drama suggests that the LGBTI community receives little support or acknowledgement from government programmes, health and social services, educational institutions, and even family and heterosexual peers. There is very little communication around LGBTI issues, and many LGBTI people, especially those living in townships, feel extremely isolated and alone.

What this drama will do
The drama, written by, for and about LGBTI people, fulfills a number of needs. It provides gays and lesbians across the country with positive, affirming images in the media. It helps gays and lesbians in smaller towns or rural areas feel less isolated and more connected with the broader LGBTI community. It also serves as an educational tool for gays and lesbians as well as for the broader community, and supports the work of ongoing projects and organisations.

Project Partners
This pilot episode is a collaboration with the Gay and Lesbian Archives of South Africa.
